Our story
"Alma" means "Soul."
This is ours.
Café Alma was born from Chef Kevin Matos' deep roots in Portuguese-American culture and his family's Matos Bakery in Pawtucket — what he lovingly calls the "Mother Bakery." After years working alongside some of Rhode Island's best chefs, Kevin returned to his roots to create something the East Side had never quite seen: a proper Portuguese tasca in the heart of Warren Avenue.
The building itself has history. The 1920s structure retains its original blue crown-molded ceilings — a fitting backdrop for a café steeped in old-world atmosphere and new-world energy. Kevin completely renovated the space into an intimate, 40-seat gathering place designed for lingering, laughing, and meaningful connection.
We call it New England Portuguese food — it's bringing in what we grew up on, then adding our own twists.

As part of Café Alma's mission, it is our goal to give back to the local community. Within the coffee shop, we host events that support local artists, entrepreneurs, and leaders, both inside and outside of the Portuguese community.
